Common Cannabis Terms

  • Battery:A device that provides the power to vaporize the oil inside the cartridge of a vape pen. The cartridge or pod containing the extracted cannabis oil is to be attached to a charged battery prior to inhalation. Most are reusable and rechargeable. The thread of the battery and the thread of the cartridge must be compatible. Most cartridges are compatible with the 510 thread, which is the most common type of battery for vaping.
  • BHO extraction: (Butane Hash oil) refers to the process of using butane as the solvent to pull the desired plant materials to create the product.
  • Cannabinoids: Substances found in cannabis that have a variety of properties-some examples are THC, CDB, CBG, THCV.
  • Cartridge: A pre-filled cannabis vape cartridge (cart) typically contains 500mg to 1000mg (1gram) of cannabis oil. The cartridge is to be connected to a battery, which will heat up the oil, activating the various chemical components and releasing them as vapor to be inhaled.
  • Co2 extraction: The process of using pressurized carbon dioxide to pull the desired plant materials to create products.
  • Cold press classic: Kief that has been pressed into blocks for vaping alone or with dry leaf.
  • Cold press concentrate: Pressed rosin from cured flower, extracted without solvent, a solvent free dab to be vaporized.
  • Concentrates: High THC extracts from cannabis that can be vaporized/inhaled using a vape pen or dabbing: vaporizing a small dose of concentrated cannabis results in immediate effect.
  • Crystalline: Also called diamonds or isolates, made using a supersaturation process resulting in a product that has over 99% cannabinoids.
  • Cured resin: Extraction from the cannabis flower that has been dried and cured after harvest.
  • Curing: The process that involves aging and/or drying the harvested plant, removal of excess moisture, preserves terpenes, enhances potency.
  • Dablicator: An innovative way to dose cannabis-concentrated oils, which can be given orally and does not require heat. It is designed to give a precise dose each time by removing the cap, twisting the bottom of the applicator until it clicks and then pressing the plunger. In addition to being used orally, the product can also be used topically and via vaporization.
  • Distillate:  Extracted product that results in a highly concentrated cannabinoid oil, mainly THC (Organic Remedies adds only cannabis derived terpenes to the distillate).
  • Dry Herb Vaporizer: Device that heats flower (bud) and converts it into an inhalable vapor.
  • Eighth: Meaning one-eighth of an ounce or 3.5 grams.
  • Extraction: The process of removing the oil found in the trichomes of the plant to collect the most useful compounds from the plant.
  • Half: Meaning one-half an ounce or 14 grams.
  • HTE: Extracted product that results in a product with high terpene amounts, a full spectrum product.
  • Kief: The name for the collection of loose cannabis trichomes, or resin glands, obtained from the cannabis flower by sifting through a sieve. Kief is rich is cannabinoids and other plant materials.
  • Live Resin: A solvent-based extract using frozen cannabis plant after harvest resulting in retaining cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavor.
  • Live Rosin: A solvent free extract using frozen cannabis and using heat/compression of the plant components to create the product.
  • Live: Using the fresh product that is frozen after harvesting.
  • Nano-emulsion: Water soluble tinctures and capsules which act within 15-20 minutes due to their small particle size. The tincture is perfect to add to liquids to make a drinkable oral solution.
  • Preground:  Cannabis that has already been ground or broken-up and ready for use
  • Prepack: Cannabis that has been weighed out and package ahead of purchase time
  • Quarter: Meaning one-fourth of an ounce or 7 grams.
  • RSO: Very thick, potent cannabis concentrate that can be ingested as an orally or used topically.
  • Rosin: Extract made without solvents in which the cannabis plant materials are pressed and heated.
  • Sap: Extracted full spectrum product that can be ingested orally or vaporized
  • Strain: A unique genetic variety of the plant, often used to name the flower. Strain names are not standardized, and the genetics and properties can vary between growers.
  • Terpene: Organic compounds found in plants, including cannabis, that work with cannabinoids to contribute to the proposed entourage effect.
  • THCA:(tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) in a product becomes THC when heated or decarboxylated, this removes carbon atoms and results in 9-tetrahydrocannabinol or delta-9 THC, the cannabinoid known for its euphoric effects.  THCA is non-psychoactive. THC is psychoactive.
  • Tincture: Liquid cannabis extracts, normally dosed with a dropper under tongue, often flavored.
  • Trichomes: Small resin gland found on the cannabis buds that contain most of the plant’s cannabinoids and terpenes.
  • Troche: A medicated tablet intended to dissolve naturally in the mouth, either between the cheek and gum (buccally) or under-the-tongue (sublingually). This method allows the medicine to enter the bloodstream quickly from the mouth, giving a rapid onset of action, while bypassing metabolism in the liver.
  • Vaping/vaporizer: The heating of cannabis oils or flower without burning. In Pennsylvania, smoking of flower is illegal and a dry herb vaporizer is to be used.
